Sphere, the Canada-based content production and distribution specialist has just received a nomination for the prestigious Peabody Award by unanimous vote from the Board of Jurors.
Sort Of is a 8x 30 series produced originally for CBC and HBO MAX by Sphere Media which oversees the creation, production and distribution of all television content within the group. The show has been nominated in the Best Comedy category.
Jennifer Kawaja , Executive Producer said: “It is such a privilege to help realize stories like Sort Of, which aim to humanize us all in relation to each other. Being nominated for the Peabody Award for that work is a great honour, and we are very thankful to the nominating committee for recognizing Sort Of.”
Sort Of was produced with the participation of the Canada Media Fund (CMF) and is distributed Internationally by Abacus Media Rights with a second season recently confirmed and going into production next month. As a result of this latest nomination for a Peabody award, Sort Of joins the ranks of the best storytelling in international broadcasting and digital media. Out of nearly 1300 entries, 60 are chosen as Nominees and 30 will then be selected as Winners at a ceremony in June.
Sort Of is one of Sphere’s most celebrated shows - recently winning three Canadian Screen Awards including Best Comedy Series and Writing and the Members’ Choice Series Ensemble Award. It also boasts a clutch of further current nominations including The GLAAD Award nomination for Best New Series, and upcoming Rockie Award nomination for Best Comedy Series and three finalist nominations from the Writer’s Guild of Canada.
Sort Of is billed as ‘a big-hearted series’ about Sabi Mehboob, a fluid millennial who straddles various identities from bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore/bar, to the youngest child in a Pakistani family, to the de facto parent of a downtown hipster family. Sabi feels like they’re in transition in every aspect of their life, from gender to love to sexuality to family to career. When Sabi’s best friend 7ven presents them with an opportunity to live in the “queerest place in the galaxy,” Sabi instead makes the decision to stay and care for the kids they nanny after their mom has a serious bike accident. Do they regret it? Sort of. A coming-of-age story, SORT OF exposes the labels we once poured ourselves into as no longer applicable... to anyone.
Sphere recently announced a brand rationalisation which will see all the group’s specialist units rebranded under the Sphere banner. Sienna Films, led by Jennifer Kawaja, BGM, headed by Marlo Miazga, and GO Films, led by Josée Vallée, are now all housed under the Sphere Media banner.
