Thirty years ago the “toki”, or the iconic crested ibis, became extinct in the wild in Japan.
Dedicated scientists and ordinary citizens struggled to breed the last remaining birds in captivity and the islanders had to change their farming methods before the toki could be returned to the wild.
But even then, they found that their problems were just beginning.
