Increasingly they found themselves sharing the spotlight with a new aristocracy, that of celebrity pop stars like the Spice Girls and Madonna as well as world famous footballers and tennis players. 

The public’s endless thirst for titillating gossip has meant that the 'true' royals have sometimes had to take a back seat to a number of seemingly flash-in-the-pan celebrity upstarts. This leads to a new 'royal' lifestyle, one that may be more in touch with 'real life' than that of newer and less 'royal' celebrities.
